It is claimed that good posture has many positive benefits - not only physical but also psychological.
Physical benefits of good posture:
- The first and most obvious benefit of good posture is the reduced likelihood of back or neck pain. When the body is in the right postural alignment the muscles and ligaments are not being overworked or strained and discs are less likely to be compressed.
- The bones are less likely to wear, reducing the risk of arthritis.
- The body's muscles are used more efficiently and therefore use less energy resulting in less fatigue.
- Reduced likelihood of restriction of blood vessels and nerves (which can lead to muscular problems as well as headaches, fatigue, organ problems and breathing difficulties).
Psychological benefits of good posture:
- People with good posture look and feel confident, they also project greater authority.
- Good posture can give people the appearance of being both taller and slimmer. It has been said that having good posture can make a person look up to 10 pounds lighter - how's that for a positive thought? (Actually, clothes do hang better on someone with good posture, so there's probably something in this).
